Residing in Pasadena, Newfoundland and Labrador with her husband Tim, and their cats Patches and Pepper, she serves as Chairperson of the Pasadena Heritage Society - NL Inc. and Secretary of the Pasadena Public Library Board.

In her free time, Carole enjoys snowshoeing, reading, swimming, and researching her family tree.

Rudy Norman

Program Coordinator, Tomorrow's Towns

Rudy Norman is a passionate advocate for rural sustainability, and brings a wealth of experience in business, economic development, and marketing to the role. As the Mayor of Burlington, NL, he has been instrumental in revitalizing his hometown, leading initiatives to boost tourism and foster community growth.

Rudy’s work includes playing a key role in the development of Shaun Majumder’s eco-tourism venture, ‘OME, where his expertise helped establish a sustainable business model that remains a cornerstone of Burlington’s tourism industry. In fact, Rudy is no stranger to MNL, having recently taken the stage at the 2024 MNL Conference alongside Shaun during the keynote address.

Born and raised in Burlington, Rudy has dedicated his career to showcasing the unique charm and potential of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. His insights and leadership continue to inspire positive change across the province, making him an ideal choice to spearhead the Tomorrow’s Towns program.

Joanna King, MBA, G.Dipl. SR&S

An experienced communicator, stakeholder engager, and strategic planner, Joanna’s career has spanned some 20 years with roles in communications, program management, and planning and performance for not-for-profits and the healthcare sector. She is a seasoned communicator with strong interpersonal skills and an affinity for building relationships through her authentic and inclusive approach with others.

Joanna is passionate about social responsibility and environmental sustainability and achieved her Graduate Diploma in Social Responsibility and Sustainability from the University of Toronto's St. Michael's College in November 2022. A lifelong learner, Joanna also holds an MBA in Innovation from the University of Fredericton, a BA in International Development Studies from Dalhousie University, a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations from Humber College, and the Four Seasons of Reconciliation course from First Nations University of Canada. She has also completed LEADS in a Caring Environment, Just Culture training, and CASCADES' Leadership for Change: Toward Sustainable Health Systems. 

Keith Parsons, MSW, RSW

A registered social worker for 30 years, Keith is an experienced leader, facilitator, clinician and strategic planner. Keith’s personal values align with his professional values, which are deeply entrenched in social fairness and justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, client engagement and partnership, respect and privacy. Keith has a great passion for organizational and program planning, team building, evaluation and quality improvement. He considers himself a lifelong learner who embraces change and challenge.

While working as a leader in healthcare, Keith has a Master’s Degree in Social Work, sits on the Board of Directors for the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers and is a professional surveyor for Accreditation Canada. He has amassed numerous diplomas and certificates relating to leadership and sustainability but attributes his career success to continued emphasis on work-life balance where his family remains his utmost responsibility. Keith is a methodical planner who leads with energy and enthusiasm.

Mariel Newell, MSc. Kin

Mariel’s career to date has included varied experiences including roles in school health, health promotion, evaluation, and planning. As a healthcare leader, she combines her personal and professional passions and successfully plans, organizes, and facilitates planning initiatives. Mariel believes success is achieved through meaningful engagement, effective communication, and collaboration. Ever the optimist, Mariel always brings positivity to her work.

Mariel obtained a Master of Science in Kinesiology from Memorial University preceded by a Bachelor of Kinesiology (Honours). Through her education, she studied physical literacy and its importance in early childhood development. This interest evolved to involvement with the local Family Resource Centre as a Board Member. Lately, Mariel’s learning comes from lessons from motherhood and family life.
