Food Security

A strong local food system is essential for the well-being of any community, yet many municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador rely heavily on imported food, making them vulnerable to supply chain disruptions and rising costs. The Food Security stream focuses on helping communities build resilient, sustainable food systems that prioritize local production, equitable access, and environmental responsibility. Ensuring that residents have access to fresh, nutritious food is not just a matter of health—it is a matter of economic security and community resilience.

Supporting local farmers, fishers, and food producers is at the heart of this stream. By creating policies and incentives that encourage local food production, municipalities can help strengthen their agricultural and fisheries sectors. This could include providing land for community gardens, establishing farmers’ markets, or supporting farm-to-school programs that integrate fresh, local produce into school meal plans. Additionally, investing in food storage, processing, and distribution infrastructure can help ensure that locally produced food remains available year-round, reducing reliance on outside suppliers.

Beyond production, food security also involves accessibility and education. Many communities struggle with food deserts, where fresh and affordable food is not readily available. Initiatives like food-sharing networks, community kitchens, and meal programs can help bridge this gap, ensuring that all residents—regardless of income—have access to healthy options. Public education campaigns can also play a role, teaching residents about nutrition, sustainable food practices, and home gardening. By prioritizing food security, municipalities can improve public health, support local economies, and create communities that are better prepared for future challenges.
